Air-Cooled vs Liquid-Cooled — What's the Difference?

For most Louisiana and Texas homeowners, a Generac air-cooled standby generator — like the Next Generation series up to 28kW — is the right answer. But some homes and properties call for something more. Here's how to know the difference.

🌬️ Air-Cooled (Up to 28kW)

Uses a fan to cool the engine. Compact, cost-effective, and the right fit for the vast majority of residential properties. Generac's Next Generation series tops out at 28kW — enough to power nearly any home.

Best for homes up to ~3,500 sq ft with standard electrical demands.

💧 Liquid-Cooled (22kW–150kW)

Uses a radiator and coolant system — like a car engine. Runs at 1,800 RPM for quieter operation, longer engine life, and better sustained performance under heavy load. The Generac Protector Series starts at 22kW and scales to 150kW.

Best for large estates, high-demand homes, or properties that need more than 28kW.

Should I step up to liquid-cooled?

Consider liquid-cooled if your home has:

  • Multiple large HVAC systems (3+ tons each)
  • A large workshop, barn, or outbuilding on the same meter
  • An electric vehicle charging setup with high demand
  • Total load that exceeds 28kW
  • A pool, hot tub, or heated structures
  • A need for quieter, longer-runtime operation

FAQ

Residential Generator FAQ

It depends on your home size and what you want to power. We perform a free home assessment to calculate your load requirements and recommend the right size — typically 10kW to 26kW for most homes.
Generac home standby generators can run on either natural gas or liquid propane (LP). We'll help determine the best fuel source based on your home's existing utility connections.
Yes. Studies show a whole-home generator can increase property value by 3–5%. It's also a strong selling point in areas prone to storms and outages.
An automatic transfer switch (ATS) monitors your utility power. When it detects an outage, it signals the generator to start and transfers your home's electrical load — typically within 10 seconds.
